...Rocks Docks and Decks...

More Info

Red Western and White Cedar are not the same.

Red Cedar is up to 50% stronger and has minimal warping due to the straighter grain because it is a larger tree.

Red Cedar versus all other composites :
- Cedar is time tested ( 100 years plus ).   Where as composites come in vast varieties and colours, which are not.
- Stay away from painted hardware and stick to hot Dipped Galvanized or Stainless.
- Nails, in our opinion, should not be used.  It should be bolts and screws.  Why use nails that can pop up when you can use screws that offer superior holding power.

Things to watch out for :
- Avoid pressure treated wood on or near water.  Pressure treated wood requires a Material Safety Data Sheet (M.S.D.S.) for a reason.
- Stay away from dock floats without the hard shell that protect from ice and rodents. Muskrats love this stuff.
- Don't build or buy a dock that touches the water.  Wood sitting in water brings on decomposition.
- Dock or deck joists should not be spaced more than 24 inches apart.
- Beware of a cedar dock that has pressure treated wood hidden in the framework.
- Watch for dock floats that have a flange for bolts less than 3/4 inch thick.  This is where all the stress is placed.
- Don't allow dock hardware that is thinner than 3/16 inch.
- Also you don't want chains less than 1/4 inch thick.

These practices may save some time and money, but severely compromise the quality and strength of your dock or deck.
